Origin

Turmeric comes from the roots of a perennial plant in the ginger family. It is native to Cochin, China. It is one of the cheapest spices, yet used on many religious and ceremonial occasions.

Alleppey and Chennai are the two hubs for Turmeric in India with the former considered to be of a higher grade owing to twice the presence of curcumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric. When purchasing Turmeric, look out for a deeper colour and purchase smaller quantities at a time as it tends to lose its aromatic flavor over time.

CRISTA QUALITY CONTROL TIP:

Spices should ideally be stored between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Under ideal conditions, ground spices will keep for 1 year and whole spices for 1 to 2 years. Tightly close the container immediately after use and return it to a cold storage space as soon as possible.
