SAFFRON

CRISTA offers you the most premium grade Indian Saffron sourced directly from Kashmir. Our supplier base has been built over four decades of trust.

Origin

Native to the Mediterranean (particularly Greece and Spain) and western Asia (90% of the world’s Saffron comes from Iran), Saffron comes from the dried stigmas of a crocus flower.

Forms

Stigmas and Filaments.

How to Store

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Threads keep their flavor for about two years. Saffron should not be stored in a refrigerator and does not take to freezing.

Taste

Bittersweet, a tad like medicine.

Crista Tips

Because it is the most expensive, Saffron is also the most adulterated spice. Buy the threads as far as possible and avoid buying it in ground form. Saffron is soluble in water and starts to bleed its colour soon after being immersed in a bowl of hot water – this is a sure way to tell if your Saffron is unadulterated.
SCIENTIFIC REMEDIES OF SAFFRON:

DID YOU KNOW?

The golden colour in Spain’s national dish, paella, comes from Saffron. Crocin, the active ingredient in Saffron, helps significantly in treating depression. It takes 80,000 crocus roses to yield 5lbs of stigmas.

CRISTA QUALITY CONTROL TIP:

Spices should ideally be stored between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Under ideal conditions, ground spices will keep for 1 year and whole spices for 1 to 2 years. Tightly close the container immediately after use and return it to a cold storage space as soon as possible.
