Origin

Nutmeg is the seed of the fruit pit of an evergreen tree. The Maluku (spice) islands and Grenada combined provide the majority of the world’s supply.

Nutmeg kernels (seed) are best kept whole and only grated when needed. In India, Nutmeg is used more than Mace because of the latter’s high cost. In India, it is used extensively in Moghul dishes. It is a key ingredient in the spice mix - garam masala. Use immediately after grinding at the end of cooking for maximum flavor.

CRISTA QUALITY CONTROL TIP:

Spices should ideally be stored between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Under ideal conditions, ground spices will keep for 1 year and whole spices for 1 to 2 years. Tightly close the container immediately after use and return it to a cold storage space as soon as possible.
