Origin

Cumin is the seed of a small, herbaceous umbellifer. It is native to Egypt, Western Asia and the Mediterranean. India is now the world’s biggest producer of Cumin, followed by Syria and Turkey.

Forms

Brownish grey seeds like caraway and ground powder.

How to Store

Store in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place. For the best flavor, only grind seeds as needed.

Taste

A strong and heavy smell, Cumin has a rich and slightly bitter taste with a persistent pungency.

Crista Tips

Dhana-jeera, a blend of cumin and coriander seeds, is immensely popular in India due to its versatility in cooking. Use Cumin sparingly at the beginning of cooking. The aroma of Cumin is enhanced if the seeds are dry-roasted before they are ground, or fried in oil if they are whole.
